Botanical Information

CrocusesCrocus flowers are a genus of their own from the family Iridaceae (Iris), and consequently, all the botanical names for the different sub divisions of these flowers begins with crocus.  For instance Crocus Sativus, whose stamens are the spice saffron.

Crocus usually flower late in Winter or early in Spring, and prefer areas that catch the sun but are well drained.

Many ancient civilisations have used Crocus plants for art, as medicine, spices and to dye fabrics. In ancient Greece saffron dyed robes were very popular.

Crocuses and their meaning

Snowdrops Close-up

Legend tells that in ancient times Krokos was a lovely youth who was in a relationship with the god Hermes, but was accidentally killed by him in a sporting incident, and thus transformed into a bloom.

Another tale attached to the flower, is that a youth, Krokos was in unrequited love with a nymph, Smilax, and to relieve his pain the gods turned him into the flower and Smilax into a thorned vine.

In the language of flowers, the Crocus is associated with youthfulness and good cheer, an early indicator of Spring, the season of renewal.  This flower is well suited to bring happiness and mirth to people.

Where can I find Crocuses in the North Wales Landscape?

It is rare to find crocus flowers growing wild in the UK however, Offa's Dyke walking Path is one of the few places you can.  The full Offa's Dyke trail begins at the Severn estuary and travels the length of wales up to the sea at Prestatyn, but shorter walks are possible.  Meadow sweet, also known as the Autumn Crocus, is dotted around these paths too.

For a less physically taxing option, you could visit the recently restored gardens of Aberglasney in Carmarthenshire.  This is the only example of an Elizabethan Cloister Garden surviving in the UK.  It has plenty of attractions including a Yew tunnel and sunken garden, with areas of rest and relaxation, this is a perfect place to see Crocus in bloom.
