Botanical Information
Helleborus niger, black Hellebore or the christmas rose is a perenial that flowers in winter. Despite it's festive moniker it is not of the rose family and is, like most other hellebore flowers, poisonous. The flowers resemble the wild or dog rose, with large flat petals that are usually white, but can be shaded pink or green with a yellow centre.
As an evergreen, hellebores are very popular with cottage gardeners, whilst it's late flowering period provides a centrepiece to winter gardens. Consequently, many cultivators have attempted to hybridise them to create more variety of shape and colour.
Christmas Roses and their meaning

According to one legend, the Christmas Rose was revealed to a shepherdess by an angel, or her tears on the snow formed the flowers on the eve of Christ's birth to give as a present to the infant. This was such an important story to the clergy and nobles of the middle ages that when a sub-species of the Christmas rose, that bloomed in England around Christmas day according to the old Julian calendar, now flowered on the date of January 6th it was considered a bad omen. As a result England did not adopt the Gregorian calendar until 1751.
Where can I find Christmas Rose in the North Wales Landscape?
The fantastic garden at Aberglasney is undoubtably one of the best places to find flowers of the hellebore family.
